Problem solving combination
sawing and cutting trimming tool
Hidden operations in the high pressure diecasting cell like trimming, fettling, drilling, tapping and sawing are crucial for
the precise transformation of cast components into finished parts. Italy’s Farina Marco offers problem solving tools to
realise these critical operations.
Cantu (CO)-based Farina Marco has provided a
solution to optimise the process for a customer
through time and production cost reduction, while
maintaining high quality standards. The
component made is a body reflector for LED
lighting, which employs a large gating system that
cannot be removed with normal breaking
operations or cleaned with shaped knives. The
main problem is due to the thickness of the gate
and its round shape. To remove this gate, a
standard hydraulic or motorised sawing system
cannot solve the problem because too much
material would be left on the part, requiring either
lengthy manual labour or secondary robotic
processing.
Farina Marco engineers identified a smart
solution on behalf of the customer, creating a
special round guide to copy the exact shape of the
part. Managed by a Merkle cylinder, this guide
runs in the upper part of the tool and is stressed by
many different forces and resistance, all
calculations having been undertaken with the
assistance of special CAE software. A large motor is
assembled on the mobile slide, with a special saw
for aluminium cutting.
The tool is installed on a 40 tons hydraulic trim
press. After first breaking the overflows with the
tool closed, the cycle runs a hydraulic cylinder to
clean some holes on the side. Now everything is
ready to cut the gate. Machine power on the
